More Than Just an Athlete

At High Performance Parenting, we make a point of working with athletes whenever we can. I used to work as a rowing coach and I remain in contact with many of my former athletes. Some are still involved in sport at a high level and some have retired from sport and moved into a different section of their life, post sport. I am keen to support all these young athletes, whether I am helping to top up their UK Sport athlete funding or mentoring an athlete through their transition from sport into the world of work, either way, it's important to me.

But actually, there's much more to it than that, this isn't just jobs for the boys (and girls) of sport, I want to work with them because, quite frankly, they are amazing. Sport teaches young people important life lessons and encourages them to develop skills which make them truly invaluable in the workplace. They can accept constructive criticism and are willing to contribute in a similar way, for me that is incredibly valuable. I want to know what people think of my ideas, posts, workshops and public profile and these young athletes are used to the process of collaborating and honing ideas to try and reach a joint goal. They are brilliant time managers, they have to be, they have always had to squeeze their life in around training so they bring this discipline to the work place. They are risk-takers. They are not afraid to put the big ideas out there, to dream massive and then make a plan to get there. And then they are happy to reflect and assess along the way, re-shape the goals as we learn, and keep driving towards the agreed outcome. And when we fail, when it all goes a bit wrong and the big dream doesn't quite come off, they are happy to laugh about it, shrug it off, learn the lessons and notch it up to experience, and then to repeat the whole process without being fearful of the outcome.

That's why I work with athletes.
